The University of Guam community celebrated an historic event on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, with the iconic UOG Field House renamed the University of Guam Calvo Field House. Through a committed donation of $3 million, the Calvo family is supporting the university\u2019s 60th Anniversary Capital Campaign and UOG\u2019s vision for a 21st Century campus.<\/p>\n

Dr. Robert A. Underwood, UOG president; the UOG Board of Regents; the UOG Endowment Foundation board of directors; industry leaders; members from the business community; and the UOG community were present at the ceremony as the Field House\u2019s new name is revealed.<\/p>\n

Jerry Calvo, a longtime supporter of the university and member of its Endowment Committee, said: \u201cThe University of Guam is such an important part of our past, present, and future, not only in Guam but throughout Micronesia. We feel blessed and privileged to able to help the university with its fundraising efforts and capital improvement campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are humbled and thankful that the university has decided to honor the memories of my father E.T. Calvo and my brother Eddie Calvo today. Dad and Eddie exemplified the principles of hard work and giving back to the community and I am sure they are very proud and happy today as is our entire family,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The patriarch of the Calvo family, Eduardo Torres \u201cJake\u201d Calvo, founded a number of extremely successful businesses that still prosper today. The Calvo family continues to help Guam flourish through contributions to the business, civic and political sectors on Guam. Now, higher education can be added to that list as this donation acknowledges the Calvo family as a \u201c21st-Century Visionary\u201d in the Triton Developers program\u2014a fundraising strategy designed to attract different levels of support spread over a certain period of time.<\/p>\n

Triton Developers are instrumental in building a 21st Century University because of the high levels of sponsorship through Naming Opportunities, which provide recognition across UOG\u2019s campus. The Calvo family\u2019s generosity and support help the university to ensure another 60 years of growth and achievement.<\/p>\n

Jesse Leon Guerrero, chairman of the UOG Endowment Foundation board of directors, said: \u201cWe are grateful for the generosity and commitment from the Calvo family. This gift highlights their pledge to the University of Guam community and the people of Guam. Their donation will go toward fulfilling the mission and vision of the University of Guam by providing a 21st Century campus for many generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
