{"id":182736,"date":"2014-10-23T04:00:36","date_gmt":"2014-10-22T18:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=182736"},"modified":"2014-10-23T04:00:36","modified_gmt":"2014-10-22T18:00:36","slug":"harbor-projects-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/harbor-projects-works\/","title":{"rendered":"Harbor projects in the works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Commonwealth Ports Authority\u2019s executive manager, Maryann Lizama, met with the U.S. Army Corps last week to discuss the rehabilitation of the Tinian harbor and modifications to the Rota Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>Lizama described the first part of the project as \u201ctechnical studies\u201d where sites will be investigated and designs made for construction in later phases.<\/p>\n<p>On Tinian, the project aims to have Tinian harbor become a safe haven for ships, as right now its breakwater is dilapidated, according to Lizama.<\/p>\n<p>On Rota, modifications will be made to widen the channel and turning basin, as well enhance facilities there, she said.<\/p>\n<p>A Rota facilities master plan was created in 1997, according to Lizama, but the present project will have to cater to water current and surges now.<\/p>\n<p>More information on the project\u2019s latter phases is expected from the Army Corps by the end of this month, according to her.<\/p>\n<p>A breakdown of the project would be presented to the CPA board at their next meeting.<\/p>\n<p>As reported earlier, the Army Corps is working with CPA on these projects, estimated to cost around $3 million, split between federal and local funds.<\/p>\n<p>However, the CNMI\u2019s share of $1.22 million for the Rota project will now the cost  $989,000, and the local cost of the Tinian project at $1.13 million is now $891,500 due a change Delegate Gregorio Kilili C.
