Carmel School’s Karleen Reyes, left, tries to outrun Elaine Enriquez of Marianas High School’s junior varsity squad in their game in the MISO caging yesterday at the MHS Gymnasium. (Jon Perez)

Mt. Carmel School’s varsity team was merciless in handing Marianas High School’s junior varsity squad a 68-11 drubbing in the opening of yesterday’s double-header in the 2014 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Girls Basketball League at the MHS Gymnasium.

The Lady Knights improved to 4-1 with their win against MHS JV to stay within striking distance against their last week’s tormentors and defending champion Lady Dolphins varsity. Mt. Carmel played two games yesterday as it was also set to face MHS 9 or the Lady Dolphins’ freshmen team. Results of the second match were unavailable at press time.

The Lady Knights were hardly threatened in the first game, as MHS’ JV team clearly lacked the basic basketball skills, like dribbling and passing the ball. It was not a pretty sight to see, as MHS missed shot after shot and committed one turnover after another the entire game.

Most of the home team’s shots are makeable lay-ups, while some either just hit the rim or were too strong, limiting the Lady Dolphins to single digit scoring in the first three quarters.

On the other hand, the Lady Knights reached the double-digit mark early with Janika Taimanao opening up the scoring for MCS, making 12 of her team’s 20 markers in the first quarter for their 17-point lead, 20-3.

The MCS advantage further ballooned to 37-5 at the turn and 48-9 after the third, as MHS went on a long scoring drought for almost 11 minutes, bridging the third and fourth quarters.

An Elaine Enriquez jumper at the 4:07 mark of the final canto was the Lady Dolphins’ junior varsity team’s first field goal since Marcy Ermitanio’s basket with barely four minutes gone in the third.

With the game in the bag as early as the first half, Lady Knights mentor Francis San Nicolas opted to let top gunner Janasia Travilla rest for most of the game and allowed Karleen Reyes to carry majority of the scoring load for MCS. Reyes scattered 19 points to pace all scorers, while Taimanao finished with 18. Travilla, despite riding the bench the entire second half, tallied 11 markers.

Ermitanio had 3 points for MHS while Enriquez, Martina Ada, Sharmaine Alarzhar and Marielle Okekeh scored 2 apiece.

MCS 68 – Reyes 19, Taimanao 18, Travilla 11, Flores 6, Han 4, Villagomez 4, Delos Santos 2, Mafnas 2, Sato 2.

MHS JV 11 – Ermitanio 3, Ada 2, Alarzhar 2, Enriquez 2, Ermitanio 2.

Scoring by quarters: 20-3, 37-5, 48-9, 68-11. (Jon Perez)

Mt.
