{"id":186609,"date":"2014-12-04T04:00:01","date_gmt":"2014-12-03T18:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=186609"},"modified":"2014-12-04T04:00:01","modified_gmt":"2014-12-03T18:00:01","slug":"becq-takes-geothermal-exploration-application","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/becq-takes-geothermal-exploration-application\/","title":{"rendered":"BECQ takes up geothermal exploration application"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality\u2019s Division of Coastal Resource Management will be holding a regulatory meeting today at their office in Gualo Rai to take up the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.\u2019s application for a geothermal exploratory well permit.<\/p>\n<p>If the division approves issuing the permit, CUC\u2019s geothermal energy project will be closer to completing the permitting process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis meeting or hearing is for the DCRM major siting permit for the geothermal feasibility project.\u00a0 It is only one part of the ongoing permitting process to begin drilling. The contractor, 4-i&#8217;s CNMI, is the lead for permitting the project,\u201d said CUC executive director Alan Fletcher said.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Maevelle Energy was awarded the contract in a joint venture with 4i\u2019s CNMI LLC and Alexander Drilling of CNMI to assess the geothermal resource potential for Saipan. <\/p>\n<p>Fletcher said that Maximino Simian, a registered geologist, will be in attendance for CUC at today\u2019s meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Fletcher explained that CUC has to go through the permitting stage first before it can progress on its geothermal explorations drilling in Gualo Rai. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe local and federal permitting processes for this project are onerous. The DCRM permit is just one step in the process,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>CUC board chair David J.
