Eloy S. Inos affirmed the ties between Japan and the CNMI amidst Japan\u2019s current economic turmoil.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_187178\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-187178\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a attid=\"187178\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/DSC_0096.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/DSC_0096-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Education officials from the Public School System and the Northern Marianas College smile for a photo at the emperor\u2019s birthday reception Wednesday night.\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-187178\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-187178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Education officials from the Public School System and the Northern Marianas College smile for a photo at the emperor\u2019s birthday reception Wednesday night.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhile the number of Japanese tourists have decreased, relations between the CNMI and Japan date back to more than a century ago, so the mutual affinity remains very strong. I personally believe we can continue to develop our ties, from friends to friends, for the years to come,\u201d Kikuchi said.<\/p>\n<p>He also promoted Japan as a place of study for CNMI students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent years, student exchanges between the CNMI and Japan have considerably expanded. Throughout this process I sincerely hope that the CNMI should focus more on universities in Japan for further study in the future,\u201d he said, adding that Japan has many private and local scholarships to offer.<\/p>\n<p>He talked about the sake ceremony to be performed that night, and how this \u201cintangible cultural property\u201d and others are enjoyed by many the world over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a pity that majority of the local CNMI residents just make a transit at the Narita International Airport to the U.S. mainland or other destinations. The emperor and his wife visited the islands in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe join the people of Japan in celebrating His Majesty\u2019s birthday as well as the historic ties to continue to bind our people and our islands together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough our Japanese tourism is declining, we are working hard to try to bring back out Japanese guests to our islands, and we\u2019re spending a lot of resources to be able to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reception was attended by more than 150 guests from the CNMI government, businesses, and the Japanese community. Emperor Akihito is the 125th emperor of Japan.<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Joseph P.
