Crocheting. Jamming. Doodle Day. These are just a few of the dozens of alternative courses that were taught this past week at Mount Carmel School as part of Mini-Course Week. In its 19th year at the school, Mini-Course Week gives junior high and high school teachers and students a chance to take a break from traditional academic instruction and dabble in hobbies and interests that engage students in hands-on learning.<\/p>\n

Quin Amog, a junior, signed up for Tomoko Shimizu\u2019s Japanese Cooking Course, in which he and his classmates learned how to cook various Japanese dishes. \u201cIt was great learning about the different techniques and about Japanese culture too,\u201d he said. About Mini-Course Week in general, he said, \u201cIt\u2019s been fun and a great experience, and it\u2019s been great to bond with other students.\u201d<\/p>\n

For 7th grade student Juan Blanco, this has been his first experience with Mini-Course Week. \u201cIt\u2019s been good and fun so far.\u201d When asked about what course he has enjoyed the most, he said, \u201cI\u2019ve really enjoyed Gamification.\u201d Taught by the school president, Galvin Deleon Guerrero, Gamification introduced students to the educational and societal benefits of gaming by having them play multiplayer cooperative games.<\/p>\n

\u201cMini-Course Week is a great way to expand our understanding of schooling to include things that people are passionate about,\u201d noted Deleon Guerrero. \u201cAnd it\u2019s great to see everyone having fun while learning!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mini-Course Week featured a wide array of unique courses, including Rosary Making, Computer Coding, Lollipop Making, Knitting, Basic Farming, and Advanced Musical Chairs. (MCS)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
