Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang is urging pet owners to take advantage of the Saipan Mayor\u2019s Office\u2019s spay\/neuter program next month.<\/p>\n
\u201cI urge everyone to take advantage of this program because it is an opportunity for them to take their dogs in for treatment,\u201d Apatang told Saipan Tribune.<\/p>\n
The spay and neutering services will be offered from May 18 to May 30.<\/p>\n
Apatang said they have added Kagman as another location to perform the spay\/neuter program in addition to the dog kennel in Lower Base.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have been preparing and we\u2019re working with some organizations in setting up for the spay and neuter program. We have also been getting in-kind contributions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Humane Society International and Animal Balance will be hosting the spay and neuter services.<\/p>\n
HSI Hawaii senior state director and Pacific Islands policy coordinator Inga Gibson said that spaying and neutering is a key component of any animal control program.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a very simple procedure. The animals live longer, they\u2019re healthier, they\u2019re less likely to bite, they\u2019re less likely to roam, and they\u2019re less likely to be perceived as a nuisance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Gibson earlier said they originally planned to charge $25 but soon decided to do it for free instead.<\/p>\n
Apatang said they are also looking for volunteers to help with the spay and neuter program.<\/p>\n
