{"id":199617,"date":"2015-04-21T04:00:41","date_gmt":"2015-04-20T18:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=199617"},"modified":"2015-04-21T04:00:41","modified_gmt":"2015-04-20T18:00:41","slug":"mhs-student-one-of-25-winners-of-natl-picture-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/mhs-student-one-of-25-winners-of-natl-picture-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"MHS student one of 25 winners of nat\u2019l picture contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COLUMBIA, Missouri\u2014A Marianas High School student has been chosen as one of the winners of the 1 for All\u2019s Picture Freedom contest, according to a news release from the organizers.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Stewart of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, is one of 25 students across the nation who will receive $1,000 scholarships for sharing original photos and artwork on social media as part of the contest.<br \/>\n<a attid=\"199747\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/9.Jack_.Stewartb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/9.Jack_.Stewartb-175x300.jpg\" alt=\"9.Jack.Stewartb\" width=\"175\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-199747\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a attid=\"199748\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/9.Jack_.Stewart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/9.Jack_.Stewart-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"9.Jack.Stewart\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-199748\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The weeklong scholarship contest celebrated the five freedoms of the First Amendment: speech, press, religion, assembly and petition. View the winning entries at 1forall.us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was truly gratifying to see the range of ways students pictured the five freedoms of the First Amendment,\u201d said Ken Paulson, president of the Newseum Institute\u2019s First Amendment Center, dean of the College of Mass Communication at Middle Tennessee State University and founder of 1 for All. \u201cThis competition was a vibrant reminder of how free expression fuels creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The contest was organized by 1 for All, the American Society of News Editors, the Journalism Education Association, and the John Seigenthaler Chair of Excellence in First Amendment Studies at Middle Tennessee State University, with funding provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe judges, all members of the Journalism Education Association, were quite amazed with the creativity of the Picture Freedom submissions, for sure,\u201d said Mark Newton, president of JEA. \u201cMore importantly, the judges were impressed with the strong messages of freedom in the submissions. When young adults use their First Amendment freedoms to articulate those very same five freedoms with a creative social media voice, those freedoms rumble and those young adults are empowered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The winning students were selected from hundreds of entries based on originality, creativity and clarity in conveying the theme of freedom.
