With the natural and symbolic, the winning pieces in the 5th Annual CNMI Art Competition told a cultural story.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a lot of great artists contribute their art to the competition this year,\u201d said Bridge Capital manager and co-owner Shawn Scott.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to thank all the artists participating this year. We look forward to many new artists joining the competition next year. It\u2019s an honor for us to sponsor this event,\u201d he said.

Awards totaled $13,000 in cash prizes. The competition categories were Best of Show, Paintings, Wood-Carving and Others, Photography, Texter\u2019s Choice Award, Governor\u2019s Choice Award, and Best New Artist<\/p>\n

\u201cBest of Show\u201d went to Robert Hunter for \u201cThe Conversation,\u201d a painting of boy and a baby sea turtle in the sand by the ocean.<\/p>\n

Under the paintings category, Rosemary Diaz won for her \u201cMay Tide.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a note to her painting, Diaz described her work as \u201ccapturing the unique formation of coconuts, fishkill seeds, decayed driftwood, sand bars, coral, rocks, and marine life.<\/p>\n

Second place for painting went to Joe Kani for \u201cSpray of Pink,\u201d a paining of native flowers.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s been doing it for many, many years in the CNMI. He continues to bring out the best in all of our arts in the CNMI,\u201d said emcee Gary Sword.<\/p>\n

For artists under ages 29 and below, Jackie Maglonzo won for her \u201cGentle Sunset.\u201d She was awarded for idyllic painting of a lagoon, palm trees, and sunset.<\/p>\n

For second place for age 29 and below was Jolly Anne Cruz came in second for her \u201cMarianas,\u201d a painting of longhaired women swaying with the sea.<\/p>\n

Peter Aldan was the crowd favorite, winning the \u201cTexter\u2019s Choice\u201d award for \u201cAncestral Roots,\u201d a white and black wood carving of a \u201cfamily tree.\u201d He received well over 1,000 text votes.<\/p>\n

First place in the photography was Lainie Zarones for her shot of a \u201cBridled whiteye or nosa on Saipan.\u201d Second place was Rosemary Diaz for \u201cThe Dance\u201d\u2014a shot of children in traditional dance garb.<\/p>\n

Under woodcarving and others, Nhorleen Bitco won first place for \u201cMutya.\u201d Nick Nick Kluwe for \u201cStretch, Zurich, and Tuli.\u201d The award is $1,000.<\/p>\n

For \u201cBest New Artist,\u201d Aldan and Bitco won first and second place for their pieces, respectively.<\/p>\n

Michael Finney won the Governor\u2019s Choice award for \u201cSerena,\u201d a woodcarving of barely clad Serena, a mermaid of Marianas legend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
