Eloy S. Inos has proclaimed May as \u201cTourism Month\u201d to celebrate the importance of the tourism industry in the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Marianas Visitors Authority, the tourism industry contributed $444 million in direct impact and more than $600 million in indirect impact to the CNMI\u2019s economy in fiscal year 2014 alone.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_200551\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-200551\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a attid=\"200551\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tourism-month-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tourism-month-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Government officials led by Lt. Pinaroc)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s monthlong Tourism Month will carry the theme \u201cTourism is everybody\u2019s business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lt. Gov. Ralph DLG. Torres, who presided over the proclamation signing on Wednesday at the Office of the Governor\u2019s conference room, urged the community to remain \u201cpolite and courteous\u201d to tourists visiting the CNMI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike what was stated before, tourism is everybody\u2019s business, and not just the MVA&#8217;s,\u201d Torres said.<\/p>\n<p>The proclamation states that tourism provides \u201copportunities for employment, economic prosperity, international trade, and cross-cultural understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In January, arrivals to the Commonwealth reached their highest level in 10 years at 45,688 visitors, while hotel occupancy rates reached an all-time record high in February.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, in fiscal year 2015, a 13.3-percent increase in arrival is projected, largely based on the addition of a new air service from South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being the main economic driver and largest private sector employer in the CNMI, the tourism industry provides numerous other benefits to residents, the proclamation reads.<\/p>\n<p>It said: \u201cTourism balances the need to preserve a healthy environment with the need for economic development and encourages the community to maintain the beauty and tranquility of our home.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The administration of Gov.
