Up to 780 dogs can be serviced during the Saipan Mayor\u2019s Office\u2019s spay\/neuter clinics this month, according to Mayor David M. Apatang and dog control program manager Spencer Marchadesch.<\/p>\n
During a budget hearing yesterday on Capital Hill, Marchadesch said, \u201cThis is a big chance for Saipan. Right now we\u2019re having requests, having reservations, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Apatang urged lawmakers to spread the word and to take advantage of the Saipan Mayor\u2019s Office\u2019s spay\/neuter services that will be offered from May 18 to May 30.<\/p>\n
It will take place at the dog kennel in Lower Base and in Kagman.<\/p>\n
The mayor\u2019s office is collaborating with the Humane Society International and Animal Balance on the clinics.<\/p>\n
This program is intended to control the growing population of stray dogs on island. Its proponents say it is a very simple procedure, with the added benefits that the animals live longer, they\u2019re healthier, they\u2019re less likely to bite, they\u2019re less likely to roam, and they\u2019re less likely to be perceived as a nuisance.<\/p>\n
So far this fiscal year, the mayor\u2019s office has registered 66 dogs, impounded 163, adopted four, reclaimed 10, euthanized 102, spayed or neutered none, and removed 10 carcasses.<\/p>\n
Apatang\u2019s and his staff\u2019s objective for this fiscal year and the upcoming fiscal year 2016 is to complete the construction of the animal shelter office, restroom, clinic and recovery room, fencing, sewage line connection, water catchment and water tank system, and a complete repair of the kennel.<\/p>\n
Other goals are to acquire new vehicles for the dog control program, uniforms for the program\u2019s staff, and to conduct more low-cost spay\/neuter programs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
