{"id":201202,"date":"2015-05-11T04:00:21","date_gmt":"2015-05-10T18:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=201202"},"modified":"2015-05-11T04:00:21","modified_gmt":"2015-05-10T18:00:21","slug":"lerios-pink-tropical-hanging-plant-wins-best-of-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/lerios-pink-tropical-hanging-plant-wins-best-of-show\/","title":{"rendered":"Lerios\u2019 pink tropical hanging plant wins \u2018Best of Show\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After an absence of more than a decade, the Saipan Flower and Ornamental Plants Festival was revived in Susupe last Saturday as part of the Saipan Sabalu Farmers\u2019 Market Inc.\u2019s projects.<\/p>\n<p>Various entries for the competition were displayed at the 4-H Club Building. A total of 83 entries from 26 individuals joined the event. They competed in 10 categories: bacchia, bougainvilla, crotons, duranta, ixora, orchids, palms, dish plants, exotic plants, and hanging plants.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_201204\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-201204\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Ornamental-pix3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Ornamental-pix3-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sophia DL Guerrero\u2019s lovely orchids won first place in its category. (Frauleine S. Villanueva)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hermes Diaz topped three of the 10 categories. Other first placers were Prince Diaz, Sophia DL Guerrero, Katrina Cabrera, Delfina Santos, Rowena Aldan, and Sang Park D.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the different flower categories, a \u201cBest of Show\u201d award was also awarded. Bonbon Lerios\u2019 pink tropical hanging plant was the declared winner.<\/p>\n<p>Cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50, along with produce and goodies, were given away to the first, second and third placers.<\/p>\n<p>Those who joined also had the option to sell their entries.<\/p>\n<p>The festival was also spearheaded by its chairwoman, Diann Torres, the wife of Lt. Gov. Ralph Torres, who said beautification of the islands and renewed support for the Sabalu Market are the main reasons for the revival of the festival.<\/p>\n<p>The festival was last held in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>However, unlike the years before when private companies with professional landscapers were the ones who mostly joined the event, this year they wanted individuals and residents to compete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust to get everybody into planting which will beautify our islands,\u201d Torres said. \u201cWe want to give the opportunity to women and men who love planting and just spread that out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aside from members of the Sabalu Market, the event was also supported and sponsored by Blossoms Floral Shop, J\u2019s Restaurant, Ace Hardware, True Value, Himawari, YCO, Saipan Shipping, and National Office Supply, among others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good turnout for a little publicity that we did and for a really short time.
