{"id":201353,"date":"2015-05-12T04:00:55","date_gmt":"2015-05-11T18:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=201353"},"modified":"2015-05-12T04:00:55","modified_gmt":"2015-05-11T18:00:55","slug":"pss-honors-troop-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/pss-honors-troop-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"PSS honors \u2018troop-teachers\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Public School System proclaimed yesterday the week of May 11 to May 15 as \u201cSupport Our Heroes-to-Teachers Week\u201d at the CNMI State Board of Education conference room.<\/p>\n<p>Their goal is to show support to those in its Heroes-to-Teachers program, its Leadership Corps, those in the U.S. Guard or Reserves, JROTC instructors, and student enlistees deployed throughout the world.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_201356\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-201356\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/PSS-troops-pix.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/PSS-troops-pix-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Public School System officials, teachers, and staff stand outside the Board of Education room after proclaiming this week \u201cSupport Our Heroes-to-Teachers Week\u201d in honor of those in PSS involved in the U.S. military. Chan)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>Board chair Herman Guerrero signed the proclamation in front of a crowd of PSS staff with yellow ribbons pinned on their shirts in support of those in military service.<\/p>\n<p>According to federal programs officer Tim Thornburg, about three to four individuals in the PSS \u201cHeroes to Teachers\u201d program join the \u201cpathway\u201d of teaching.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cWe started this in 2006 and it looks like we are going to continue it,\u201d said Thornburg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am thankful that every year we see three to four of our heroes earn a bachelor\u2019s degree and become classroom teachers\u2014and that\u2019s one of the goals of this program. It\u2019s a non-traditional pathway but it\u2019s becoming now a traditional pathway to becoming a classroom teacher,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Guerrero acknowledged the service members for protecting the freedoms of the country and the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate that you have chosen the Public School System as a profession. It\u2019s a different mission but I\u2019m sure it is very difficult at times,\u201d he said, adding that they would find this mission \u201csatisfactory and wonderful,\u201d in \u201csharing your experiences with our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe congratulate all of you, and salute all of you for being a member of the PSS family,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Education Commissioner Dr. Rita Sablan thanked PSS staff for putting together a host of activities for this week.<\/p>\n<p>Marianas High School principal Cherlyn Cabrera said their student exit surveys every year show 1 in about 4 students say they want to join the military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they come home I\u2019m glad they have programs intact\u201d for them to pursue, she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Heroes-to-Teachers program used to be called the Troops-to-Teachers Program.
