{"id":202594,"date":"2015-05-26T06:00:12","date_gmt":"2015-05-25T20:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=202594"},"modified":"2015-05-26T06:00:12","modified_gmt":"2015-05-25T20:00:12","slug":"labor-education-to-play-crucial-role-in-cw-transition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/labor-education-to-play-crucial-role-in-cw-transition\/","title":{"rendered":"Labor: Education to play \u2018crucial\u2019 role in CW transition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The importance of realigning education in the CNMI with workforce training goals were underscored in a CNMI Department of Labor report on \u201cForeign Worker Transition Initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finalized in April, this report includes, among other initiatives, an emphasis on job fairs and enforcement of labor rules.<\/p>\n<p>A drastic shortfall of local capacity is expected when the contract worker period expires in 2019. With this in the horizon, public and private agencies have discussed efforts to meet this impending change.<\/p>\n<p>Labor, under the education initiative section of its report, highlighted the Public School System\u2019s Cooperative Program, or \u201cco-op\u201d program as \u201ccrucial\u201d to enable businesses to cope with the projected worker shortfall.<\/p>\n<p>Co-op is designed to help prepare high school graduates for the job market. Students participate on-site as a \u201ctrainee\u201d at a business.<\/p>\n<p>Labor said the \u201coverall numbers of student placement in the co-op program are more attracted to the private sector industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe co-op program offers high school students a competitive advantage in the job market by providing them with on-site training and workforce skills, while reducing training costs to employers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a crucial element to the successful transition of the CNMI job market post-2019, as 15 [percent] of high school graduates enter the labor force following graduation,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to the Northern Marianas College, Labor noted that 61 percent of CNMI public school graduates enter college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany choose to attend\u201d NMC, Labor said, noting that NMC\u2019s Strategic Plan for 2015-2020 helps build the \u201cnecessary and professional skills of the CNMI labor force.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The college\u2019s five-year goals are to increase the college\u2019s relevance to the CNMI workforce and community needs, ensure continued accreditation, accelerate time to complete, improve student success and support, and strengthen operations and resource development.<\/p>\n<p>Labor also highlighted the Northern Marianas Technical Institute\u2019s more than a dozen programs that are \u201caligned with the needs of the CNMI\u201d to train and prepare U.S citizens and other permanent residents for jobs in the local economy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The importance of realigning education in the CNMI with workforce training goals were underscored in&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":47,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[900,4],"tags":[26,118,4844,69],"class_list":["post-202594","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-featured","category-local-news","tag-cnmi","tag-cw","tag-labor-education","tag-nmc"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/202594","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/47"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=202594"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/202594\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=202594"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=202594"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=202594"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
