Eddie Calvo and Sen. Tommy Morrison recently discussed the concerns of Guam’s baseball community regarding Paseo Stadium’s playing field, which was damaged during a huge concert earlier this month.

With more than $700,000 already designated for the repair of various facilities at Paseo Stadium within the next several months, Calvo and Morrison agreed that efforts must be made to ensure that the playing field in Guam’s premier public baseball facility is properly prepared to serve the needs of our sports community—and events related to educational, cultural, tourism, and other approved activities.

Certain sections of Paseo Stadium’s playing field was damaged by vehicles and heavy equipment that were used during last month’s concert.

After learning that the playing field was damaged, members of Guam’s baseball community sought Morrison’s assistance in restricting the use of Paseo Stadium for sports events and activities. The recent damage, and the anticipated length for recovery, have forced members of Guam’s baseball community to delay the scheduling of various youth and adult leagues until the playing field is safely restored.

To help ensure that Paseo Stadium remains available for use by the sports community, Morrison introduced Bill No. 120-33 (COR) which seeks to limit the use of Paseo Stadium and the nearby Jose C. Guerrero Field for sports events and activities. According to Morrison, “other areas within Hagåtña, including the huge parking area adjacent to Paseo Stadium, should be able to meet the logistical needs of huge concerts and similar events.”

“In light of my preliminary conversations with Governor Calvo and his senior staff, there appears to be a path forward that could accommodate non-sporting events and activities in the future—without compromising Paseo Stadium’s playing field. I appreciate Governor Calvo’s commitment to work with me in finding a balance on this issue. Interestingly, understanding baseball popularity and the success of the Guam Major League (GML) and youth baseball, the construction of Paseo Stadium in 1981 was made possible with the full support of his father, former Governor Paul Calvo. I thank everyone who has contributed to this issue and I look forward to strengthening Bill No. 120-33 (COR),” concluded Morrison.

For additional information regarding information contained in this press release, please contact Senator Morrison’s office at 478-8669 or send an e-mail to tommy@senatormorrison.com.

Gov.
