(Oceania Tennis)

Lee clinched the championship in the consolation bracket after beating fellow Pacific Oceania bet Ayana Rengiil of Palau in the finals, 7-5, 6-2, last Saturday at the Regional Training Centre in Lautoka. Both Lee and Rengiil dropped to the consolation draw after the former faltered in her first round match in the main draw and the latter was booted out in the second. Lee fell to the No. 16-ranked Claudia Ng of Hong Kong, 6-0, 6-3, while Rengiil won over Japan’s Chisato Hayakawa, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 (6) before bowing to the second-seeded Ayumi Miyamoto, also of Japan, 0-6, 1-6.

In the consolation draw, Lee had to eliminate two foes to set up a finals date with Rengiil. Lee first knocked of Australia’s Hannah Matic, 4-0, 4-0, to march into the semifinals against Hong Kong’s Avril Look. A 4-2, 4-0 triumph versus the Hong Kong bet gave Lee the finals berth in the lower bracket. Rengiil, on the other hand, recorded victories against Fiji’s Ruby Coffin, 4-2, 4-0, and Solomon Island’s Georjemah Row, 1-4, 5-4 (8), 11-9, to gain the championship berth in the upper bracket and arrange a title duel against Lee.

In the finals, Lee swept Rengiil, ending the match after one and a half hour—the latter’s longest game in the consolation draw. Lee took only 27 minutes to shut down Matic and 45 minutes to oust Look.

[5
4137,164,338,319
post-205332","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sports","tag-ayana-rengiil","tag-fiji","tag-hong-kong","tag-palau
["GET
