{"id":206214,"date":"2015-07-27T15:11:17","date_gmt":"2015-07-27T05:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=206214"},"modified":"2015-07-27T15:11:17","modified_gmt":"2015-07-27T05:11:17","slug":"good-turnout-for-protected-status-presentation-for-nepalese-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/good-turnout-for-protected-status-presentation-for-nepalese-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Good turnout for \u2018protected status\u2019 presentation for Nepalese community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A presentation on the granting of \u201ctemporary protected status\u201d to members of the Nepalese community drew a sizable crowd Friday evening at the American Memorial Park auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>The presentation was conducted by the law firm Mailman and Kara.<\/p>\n<p>Law firm partner Bruce Mailman said the turnout was \u201cgood\u201d considering that the Nepalese community on Saipan is quite small.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had about 25 adults. It is a small community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mailman stressed that the presentation was an outreach program, and he hopes there will be a \u201cripple\u201d effect for members of this community.<\/p>\n<p>He added that most of the questions on the presentation were related to concerns about those who are out of status.<\/p>\n<p>Other Nepalese citizens who are in status also asked if they can apply for the \u201ctemporary protected status,\u201d Mailman said.<\/p>\n<p>Mailman said they would advise those who have good status \u201cto think twice before jumping to a new status.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you do not have status or not in good status, or you are unhappy with your situation, then maybe you can get a protected status,\u201d he said, adding that one can then get an EAD or employment authorization document so that you can \u201chave opportunities thereafter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attorney Maya B. Kara said a \u201ctemporary protected status\u201d can give members of the Nepalese community some breathing room, particularly those working for embattled Tinian Dynasty Hotel &#038; Casino.<\/p>\n<p>She said the \u201dtemporary protected status\u201d is being made available for residents of countries that have been affected by ecological disasters, such as Nepal and Haiti.<\/p>\n<p>Kara said what the temporary status does is protect Nepalese citizens from being \u201cremoved\u201d from the CNMI.<\/p>\n<p>She said Nepalese citizens can apply for the status starting June.
