On July 16, the Saipan Young Professionals Committee featured both a past and a present member of the CNMI House of Representatives for their \u201cInspirational Speakers Night.\u201d The committee designated July as \u201cGovernment Month,\u201d focusing on leaders within the CNMI Legislature.<\/p>\n

This Inspirational Speakers Night featured current Rep. Edmund Villagomez (Ind-Saipan) and former representative Janet U. Maratita. As a young professional and current member of the 19th Legislature, Villagomez shared information about the process to run for a seat in the House of Representatives, and shared his experience with current bills and resolutions he has personally introduced throughout his terms. He shared the importance of having a \u201cpassion\u201d to serve the people of the CNMI, especially for young professionals aspiring to be government leaders in the future. He discussed the difficult and timely process that lawmakers must face when introducing bills and the critical need for representatives to involve their community members during the process. In closing, he emphasized that \u201cif you do what is right for your community, the public will recognize your good work.\u201d He also urged young professionals to stand up for what is right, despite the challenges that may come. Villagomez also encouraged young professionals to run for office and to make a positive difference for the people of the CNMI.

\nFormer lawmaker Maratita gave a female\u2019s perspective and insight on her life before, during, and after her terms as a representative. The theme of her speech centered on \u201cperseverance.\u201d She shared her struggles as a mother and the turning point in her life that inspired her to run for a seat in the House of Representatives. She also shared the challenges that she, as a female, faced in the House of Representatives whose members were (and still are) predominantly male. She said that, although she lost a few elections, she remained confident and persevered through. She stated that after her terms in office, she remains active in her community, dedicating her time to various community organizations. Her advice for SYP members was to have perseverance even in the most challenging of circumstances. She also stated that entering politics is difficult and that you must be strong, willing, and able to serve for the greater good.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs young professionals, it\u2019s important to continue learning from past and present leaders in our community. A part of the SYP mission to \u2018inspire young professionals to influence positive change.\u2019 By meeting inspirational speakers, we\u2019re able to gain the education needed to be better leaders ready and willing to influence positive change for our future,\u201d said SYP chair Mable Ayuyu.<\/p>\n

Both presentations provided SYP members with an in-depth look at the importance of the workings of our local government.
