{"id":206661,"date":"2015-07-30T06:06:34","date_gmt":"2015-07-29T20:06:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=206661"},"modified":"2015-07-30T06:06:34","modified_gmt":"2015-07-29T20:06:34","slug":"lawmakers-to-meet-with-ite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/lawmakers-to-meet-with-ite\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawmakers to meet with IT&amp;E"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the House Committee on Public Utilities, Transportation, and Communications are set to meet with representatives of IT&#038;E sometime next week.<\/p>\n<p>The main purpose of the meeting, according to Rep. Francis Taimanao (Ind-Saipan), who chairs the committee, is to inquire about the service provider\u2019s contingency plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would like to know what their plans are, should another incident like this happens in the future,\u201d Taimanao.<\/p>\n<p>The CNMI suffered a massive communications outage a few weeks ago, and according to IT&#038;E, services returned to normal last Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Repairs to the damaged submarine fiber optic cable were also completed, the service provider said.<\/p>\n<p>Taimanao said he has already sent the letter of invitation for the meeting on Aug. 5 at the House chamber on Capital Hill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will ask not just for the status, but for the damages that it [outage] created, including losses of the business community,\u201d Taimanao said.<\/p>\n<p>He also plans to ask IT&#038;E about it has a plan to upgrade its backup system to \u201cat least provide minimum operating capacity for the community\u201d if an outage happens again in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr at least a system to allow certain essential agencies, from both the private and public sectors, to be the priority,\u201d Taimanao.<\/p>\n<p>He also plans to ask IT&#038;E of its plan to address \u201cbottleneck\u201d concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen services come back on and everyone on the CNMI start accessing, a bottleneck is created.
