I write to you to provide some updates and information in the wake of Typhoon Soudelor. I recognize that due to the disruption of power and communications, some of you may not receive this message via email or online, which is why we will also disseminate this message via local media.

First, despite the damage and destruction caused by Typhoon Soudelor, we are extremely grateful that there was no reported loss of life. Natural disasters around the world often result in numerous fatalities, and we are lucky and blessed that such was not the case for us.

Second, please note that due to the disruption of power and water services caused by Typhoon Soudelor, the opening date of the 2015–2016 school year for both Mount Carmel School and Sister Remedios Early Childhood Development Center has been postponed until further notice. We are currently assessing the damage to the school and monitoring updates on key infrastructure—power, water, communications—in order to determine when the school year will start. We hope to issue an announcement in this regard sometime next week.

Third, we ask that everyone remain safe as the island struggles with access to essentials like food, water, and shelter. At this point, the safety and livelihood of the people of Saipan are the top priority. Should you need any assistance, please contact the appropriate government or non-profit agency.

Fourth and last, we must take this time to pray and have faith. These have been trying times, and the days ahead will continue to be a struggle. However, if our islands’ and school’s history have taught us anything, it is this: we are resilient. Just as Fr. Arnold Bendowsky and the school family recovered from Typhoon Jean in the 1960s, so shall we.

As yesterday’s Gospel reading challenges us, in the midst of a raging storm in the sea, Jesus reached out to the apostles and said, “‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’ After they got into the boat, the wind died down.”

So, as we move forward, please have faith, and never lose hope. Indeed, the worst of times can bring out the best in all of us. Together, we will do more than just survive; we will thrive.

Sincerely in Christ,

Galvin Deleon Guerrero
President
Mount Carmel School

May the Peace of Christ be with you!
