{"id":208548,"date":"2015-08-20T06:00:05","date_gmt":"2015-08-19T20:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=208548"},"modified":"2015-08-20T06:00:05","modified_gmt":"2015-08-19T20:00:05","slug":"man-gets-1-year-prison-term-for-ice-possession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/man-gets-1-year-prison-term-for-ice-possession\/","title":{"rendered":"Man gets 1-year prison term for \u2018ice\u2019 possession"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A man who was found in possession of less than a gram of methamphetamine or \u201cice\u201d after he was stopped in As Lito for a traffic offense pleaded guilty yesterday and was slapped with a one-year prison term.<\/p>\n<p>Walter Arellano Florencio Jr. pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance.<\/p>\n<p>Superior Court Associate Judge David A. Wiseman ordered Florencio to serve the prison term day for day without the possibility of parole.<\/p>\n<p>Florencio was given credit for time served. He was ordered to pay a $2,000 fine and $100 court assessment fee.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant attorney general Emily Cohen appeared for the government. Chief Public Defender Douglas Hartig served as counsel for Florencio.<\/p>\n<p>According to police, officer David Hosono was doing a periodic check on Tun Joaquin Doi Road in Finasisu on May 27, 2015, and was about to turn toward Martinez Road in As Lito when he saw a tinted car in front of his vehicle with no safety sticker for 2015 on the rear license plate.<\/p>\n<p>Hosono pulled the car over on the shoulder of the road near Matty\u2019s Barbecue. The officer saw that Florencio\u2019s passengers\u2014his girlfriend and her baby\u2014were not wearing safety belts.<\/p>\n<p>Florencio apologized to the officer, saying it was a rental car and he does not have with him his driver\u2019s license and vehicle registration.<\/p>\n<p>The officer saw in the car some tools used to smoke \u201cice\u201d so he advised the defendant to step out of the car. The officer then found a container under the driver\u2019s seat floor.
