United 4 Saipan presented a plaque of appreciation to Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) and his wife, Andrea, Thursday last week for the personal donations they made to the group immediately after Typhoon Soudelor.<\/p>\n

\u201cCongressman Kilili and his wife were among the very first people to support our water relief efforts,\u201d United 4 Saipan volunteer coordinator Jenny Hegland said. \u201cHe and Mrs. Sablan personally donated $500 worth of drinking water the very first day we distributed into villages more than six weeks ago. We are grateful for their generosity.\u201d

\nWhen United 4 Saipan later expanded their efforts to include the delivery of care packages with food and other supplies, the Sablans donated 1,400 canisters of butane to go into the packages. The total value of the donations of water and butane was $1,756.50.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAndrea and I have been so inspired by the positive energy and commitment of the United 4 Saipan volunteers we\u2019ve met,\u201d Sablan said. \u201cMany are young people who are all survivors themselves, and they continue to give so much.\u00a0 We just wanted to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Sept. 17, the Sablans met with a group of about a dozen United 4 Saipan volunteers, many of whom said they intend to stay involved in the community through the newly formed U4S youth team. The group is composed of students below 18 who are willing to give their time to help the community. They aim to assist the island in any way they can with its current needs. Many will\u00a0join United 4 Saipan\u2019s next phase of volunteerism, helping families repair and secure safe, habitable, and sanitary conditions in their homes before rebuilding can occur. Some U4S youth also aspire to sign up for the Public School System\u2019s Americorps unit in the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n
