{"id":212120,"date":"2015-10-09T06:06:18","date_gmt":"2015-10-08T20:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=212120"},"modified":"2015-10-09T06:06:18","modified_gmt":"2015-10-08T20:06:18","slug":"sablan-updates-kiaaina-on-pss-projects-after-soudelor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/sablan-updates-kiaaina-on-pss-projects-after-soudelor\/","title":{"rendered":"Sablan updates Kia\u2019aina on PSS projects after Soudelor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Soudelor\u2019s damage to public school facilities may require a reassessment of the first phase of a federally funded deferred maintenance project.<\/p>\n<p>That DM project\u2014the Office of Insular Affairs\u2019 \u201cAssessment of Buildings and Classrooms\u201d Initiative\u2014is one of several Department of the Interior-funded projects for the CNMI Public School System.<\/p>\n<p>Education Commissioner Dr. Rita Sablan disclosed that during a meeting on Tuesday with Esther Kia\u2019aina, the U.S. Department of the Interior assistant secretary for insular affairs, they discussed three Interior-funded projects: the Marianas High School\u2019s solar energy bid project, the \u201cConnect Youth to Career\u201d program, and the deferred maintenance project.<\/p>\n<p>On the DM project, Sablan said they completed the \u201cwork plan\u201d so hopefully they can get started with the project as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>She said the project is one of things they are going to start working on immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe gave [Kia\u2019aina] a rundown of our damage estimates and our list of hazard mitigation [plans] that we are working on,\u201d Sablan told Saipan Tribune.<\/p>\n<p>When asked how Typhoon Soudelor affects the DM project, Sablan pointed to how a lot of their projects were related to electrical systems. In fact, \u201cPhase 1\u201d of the ABC initiative centers on electrical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was additional damage to our electrical assessment,\u201d Sablan disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe the Army Corps of Engineer or the [ABC project] consultant will probably have to revisit and see what is wrong with the additional damage to the Phase 1 project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it would be necessary to do that,\u201d Sablan said. \u201cFor example, Garapan Elementary School sustained electrical damage in their roofs\u2014tin roofs flew away.
