{"id":212493,"date":"2015-10-15T07:18:08","date_gmt":"2015-10-14T21:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=212493"},"modified":"2015-10-15T07:18:08","modified_gmt":"2015-10-14T21:18:08","slug":"amp-pacific-historic-parks-host-inaugural-peace-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/amp-pacific-historic-parks-host-inaugural-peace-day\/","title":{"rendered":"AMP, Pacific Historic Parks host inaugural \u2018Peace Day\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In its inaugural \u201cPeace Day\u201d last Sunday, the American Memorial Park and Pacific Historic Parks remembered those who died when a nuclear bomb was detonated in Hiroshima.<\/p>\n<p>The B-29 bomber, Enola Gay, dropped an atomic bomb on the morning of Aug. 6, 1946, killing 80,000 people instantaneously. Years after, thousands of Japanese residents have died due to exposure from the bomb that caused radiation illness, leukemia, and cancer, according to education specialist assistant Nicole Schafer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212495\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212495\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Peace.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-212495\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Peace-300x292.jpg\" alt=\"American Memorial Park and Pacific Historic Parks education specialist assistant Nicole Schafer. (Contributed Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The event on Sunday at the American Memorial Park involved\u00a0tourists and residents making paper cranes that will be sent to Japan as a sign of peace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our first time doing it and we\u2019re hoping next year to get the schools involved across the island so we can send more cranes,\u201d she told Saipan Tribune.<\/p>\n<p>Although the event was delayed due to the recent typhoon, Schafer hopes that people from all walks of life will never forget the lives lost on that day, including Sadako\u2019s, a 7-year-old Japanese student who fell victim to what was referred to as the\u00a0 \u201cA-bomb\u201d disease then.<\/p>\n<p>In Japan, it is believed that a person who make 1,000 paper cranes will have their wish granted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer wish was to get better,\u201d Schafer said.<\/p>\n<p>Sadako only managed to make 644 cranes before succumbing to the disease.
