{"id":213089,"date":"2015-10-26T06:06:48","date_gmt":"2015-10-25T20:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=213089"},"modified":"2015-10-26T06:06:48","modified_gmt":"2015-10-25T20:06:48","slug":"fijian-student-wins-face-of-the-future-tv-show-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/fijian-student-wins-face-of-the-future-tv-show-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Fijian student wins \u2018Face of the Future\u2019 TV show competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SUVA, Fiji\u2014University of the South Pacific student Ivy Talei Marrissia Toro will be the new face on The Pacific Way, the flagship TV show of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, come 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Toro will work with The Pacific Way crew to film and share her story on youth issues, which will be aired on 21 stations across the Pacific Islands region.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_213090\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-213090\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Fiji-pix.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Fiji-pix-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"Ivy Toro poses at the SPC office in Suva, Fiji. (Contributed Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nSPC launched The Pacific Way: Face of the Future Competition on Aug. 12\u2014International Youth Day\u2014inviting young people in the Pacific to raise awareness of the new Pacific Youth Development Framework aimed at achieving a sustainable Pacific where all young people are safe, respected, empowered and resilient.<\/p>\n<p>The 19-year-old Foundation Science student at the USP won the public vote to become a guest reporter with 434 likes on Facebook and YouTube, edging out fellow finalist Clemensia Talo Sioneholo of Niue.<\/p>\n<p>Toro, from Ba Province in the Western side of Fiji, attributed her win to her mother and sister who urged her to apply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope to raise awareness not only in Fiji but in other Pacific Island countries on learning and development disabilities among young people in our nations. This affects quality education and their employment opportunities,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Toro said that sharing her story on The Pacific Way would be a positive way to address the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went through school meeting youth with disability challenges, who struggled through school and did not have access to proper help.
