\nStudents and teachers of Chacha Oceanview Middle School are hoping to retain the titles in the caroling and float competitions of the Christmas in the Marianas Festival.<\/p>\nChacha\u2019s presentation this year was inspired by the fictional children\u2019s book character, the Grinch, of Dr. Seuss.<\/p>\n
Rose Jones, a seventh and eighth grade teacher at Chacha, said she and Nadia Murphy helped conceptualized the student\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe decided to go with the Grinch theme this year where we teach him why we celebrate Christmas and the values it brings,\u201d said Jones.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is new to us and it\u2019s our first time for us to organize the kids. We\u2019re the defending champions, so hopefully we win again, including the float,\u201d Jones added.<\/p>\n
Performers of elementary, middle, and high school teams livened up the night with Christmas carols and dances that brought cheer to the hundreds that gathered to watch the contest.<\/p>\n
Kagman Elementary School students sang Christmas carols in different languages with ukuleles as accompaniment.<\/p>\n
The Northern Marianas International School\u2019s middle schoolers\u2019 presentation was a medley of lively Christmas carols highlighted by Britney Spears\u2019 My Only Wish (This Year), with Christian Aldan working the crowd with a spirited performance.<\/p>\n
Kagman High School\u2019s skit showed how the Ayuyus and the rest of the Marianas party during the holiday season.<\/p>\n
Other schools that fielded carolers were Green Meadow School, William S. Reyes Elementary, Koblerville Elementary, Hopwood Middle School, San Vicente Elementary, and Kagman High.<\/p>\n
Schools that failed to perform last Saturday would still perform their respective skits on Dec. 19 while the announcement of all winners, where a total of $31,000 in cash and prizes are at stake, will be on Dec. 26.<\/p>\n
A crazy costume contest is still ongoing, with Cheyann Concepcion and Frankileain Kapileo as the entries of Green Meadow School and Chacha Oceanview, respectively.<\/p>\n
A new event this year is the teachers\u2019 karaoke singing contest every week where they battle up to the finals. The singing contest offers a $1,000 cash prize. Perpetual trophies\u2014also a new feature this year\u2014for elementary, middle and high schools in the float and caroling competitions will be given to the winners.<\/p>\n
The caroling contest has a total of $6,800 in prize money, the float contest holds $4,000, while the Christmas costume has $ 1,250 in prizes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
