To celebrate its 24th anniversary this week, the Joeten Kiyu Public Library will be having a free astronomy presentation this Friday with Keith Murdock, a visiting board member of the Rockland Astronomy Club of New York.<\/p>\n
Murdock\u2019s presentation, \u201cThe Birth and Death of the Solar System,\u201d will take place in the library\u2019s Pacific Room at 4:30pm.<\/p>\n
Murdock\u2019s lecture is for you if you would like to know how the solar system was formed, what chaotic events shaped the history of Earth and other planets, if the Earth gave birth to the moon, the reasons for the four seasons, the origins of the sun, and the ultimate fate of the Earth.<\/p>\n
Murdock is a software engineer and medical device test engineer. He got hooked on amateur astronomy while viewing the comet Hyakutake in 1996. He is currently the lecture series coordinator for the Rockland Astronomy Club and frequently lectures on visual astronomy and planetary science. Murdock is also an avid fan of astro-tourism, using large telescopes to observe the planets from high elevations such Mt. Wilson in California and Mauna Kea in Hawaii. In 2005, he was able to locate Planet 10, an object in space that is orbiting the Sun in the Kuiper Belt far beyond Pluto.<\/p>\n
If that doesn\u2019t get you pumped up and fitness is more your thing, the library is featuring a Free Fitness Half-Hour this afternoon from 5:15pm to 5:45pm. Interested participants are encouraged to wear comfortable workout clothing, proper shoes, and to bring a small towel and bottled water.<\/p>\n
Since the library\u2019s inception in 1991, patrons have used the library for a variety of reasons including checking email, surfing the Internet, job hunting, basic computer classes, live homework help, after-school programs, earning volunteer hours and paid work experience, learning English as a second language, learning to play the ukulele, attending a club or professional meeting, enjoying a free movie, seminar, or public hearing, or just finding a good book and much more. So come on down and support your local library on its 24th birthday.<\/p>\n
