{"id":218560,"date":"2016-01-13T04:00:43","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T18:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=218560"},"modified":"2016-01-13T04:00:43","modified_gmt":"2016-01-12T18:00:43","slug":"wespac-offers-3-new-college-graduate-scholarships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wespac-offers-3-new-college-graduate-scholarships\/","title":{"rendered":"WESPAC offers 3 new college, graduate scholarships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council and its Education Committee members announced the availability of three scholarships for academic years 2016-2017 and\u00a02017-2018.<\/p>\n<p>These scholarships support the aspiration to build the capacity of American Samoa, Guam,\u00a0and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands to effectively manage their fisheries\u00a0and related resources through the employment of their own people.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Pacific Territories Capacity-Building Scholarships may be used for to complete junior and senior years to obtain one of the following undergraduate\u00a0degrees: BA or BS in Marine Science at the University of Hawaii at Hilo or BS in Oceanography with a concentration in Fisheries Science at the Hawaii Pacific\u00a0University; or completion of one of the following graduate degrees: MS or Ph.D. in Marine Biology at the University of Hawaii at M\u0101noa\u203as Hawaii Institute of\u00a0Marine Biology, MS in Marine Science at Hawaii Pacific University, MS in Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science at the University of\u00a0Hawaii at Hilo, or MS in Biology at the University of Guam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Undergraduate Student<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Be a U.S. citizen or national with strong ties to American Samoa, Guam or the CNMI;<\/p>\n<p>2. Have successfully completed freshman and sophomore years of college with a grade point average\u00a0of 3.0;<\/p>\n<p>3. Have been accepted to attend the University of Hawaii at Hilo (BA or BS in Marine Science) or \u00a0Hawaii Pacific University (BS in Oceanography with a Concentration in Fisheries Science) in Honolulu for the 2015-2016 academic year;<\/p>\n<p>4. Be available for an 8- to 10-week paid internship in Hawaii;<\/p>\n<p>5. Have demonstrated interest and\/or previous work\/involvement with fisheries, coral reef\u00a0conservation or related fields;<\/p>\n<p>6. Commit to being employed for a minimum of two years (one year for each scholarship year) with\u00a0the American Samoa Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources, Guam Department of Agriculture, or\u00a0the CNMI Department of Lands and Natural Resources after completion of the undergraduate degree.\u00a0Those who do not fulfill this commitment will be required to pay back the scholarship amount that\u00a0has been provided.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Graduate student<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Be a U.S. citizen or national with strong ties to American Samoa, Guam or the CNMI;<\/p>\n<p>2. Have been accepted to attend one of the following graduate programs for the 2015-2016\u00a0academic year: University of Hawaii at M\u0101noa\u2019s MS or PhD in Marine Biology; Hawaii Pacific\u00a0University\u2019s MS in Marine Science; University of Hawaii at Hilo\u2019s MS in Tropical Conservation\u00a0Biology and Environmental Science; or University of Guam\u2019s MS in Biology;<\/p>\n<p>3. Have demonstrated interest and\/or previous work\/involvement with fisheries, coral reef\u00a0conservation or related fields;<\/p>\n<p>4. Commit to being employed for one year for each scholarship year (maximum two years) with the\u00a0American Samoa Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources, Guam Department of Agriculture, or the\u00a0CNMI Department of Lands and Natural Resources commencing within the year after completion of the\u00a0graduate degree or departure from the educational program for which the scholarship was provided. \u00a0Those who do not fulfill this commitment will be required to pay back the scholarship amount that has been provided.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ELIGIBILITY DOCUMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Undergraduate Student<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Complete the accompanying scholarship application and a two-page essay on your reasons for\u00a0pursuing your chosen degree. The essay should include a summary of your relevant experience, your\u00a0long term career goals and your motivations to serve your home islands in the area of sustainable\u00a0marine resource management.<\/p>\n<p>2. Provide an official college transcript of freshman and sophomore classes completed to date;\u00a0and<\/p>\n<p>3. Submit two letters of recommendation, one by a college instructor of your choice and one by a\u00a0community leader who can speak to your overall ability, likelihood of your success in an\u00a0undergraduate program of study in Hawaii, and commitment to working in a local fisheries related\u00a0agency for a minimum of two years upon completion of the undergraduate degree.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Graduate Student<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Complete the accompanying scholarship application and a two-page essay on your reasons for\u00a0pursuing your chosen degree. The essay should include a summary of your relevant experience, your\u00a0long term career goals and your motivations to serve your home islands in the area of sustainable\u00a0marine resource management.<\/p>\n<p>2. Provide official undergraduate college transcripts and, if relevant, graduate-level college\u00a0transcripts;<\/p>\n<p>3. Submit two letters of recommendation from professors, employers and\/or community leaders who\u00a0can speak to your overall ability, likelihood of your success in a graduate program of study in\u00a0Hawaii, and commitment to working in a local fisheries related agency for a minimum of two years\u00a0upon completion of the undergraduate degree.<br \/>\nMail completed application and letters of recommendation to Kitty M. Simonds, Executive Director,\u00a0Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council, 1164 Bishop Street, Suite 1400, Honolulu,\u00a0Hawaii 96813, by February 29, 2016. Preliminary decisions will be made by March 15, 2016. Final\u00a0decision is contingent upon 1) an acceptance letter from the University of Hawaii at Hilo, Hawaii\u00a0Pacific University or the University of Hawaii at M\u0101noa HIMB for the 2016-2017 academic year; and\u00a02) the signing of an agreement to work with the American Samoa Department of Marine and Wildlife\u00a0Resources, Guam Department of Agriculture, or the CNMI Department of Lands and Natural Resources in\u00a0fisheries ecosystem related work for one year of each scholarship year or to provide immediate\u00a0reimbursement for the scholarship funds that had been provided.
