{"id":218832,"date":"2016-01-18T06:06:36","date_gmt":"2016-01-17T20:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=218832"},"modified":"2016-01-18T06:06:36","modified_gmt":"2016-01-17T20:06:36","slug":"18-3m-remaining-16-operational-funding-american-samoa-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/18-3m-remaining-16-operational-funding-american-samoa-released\/","title":{"rendered":"$18.3M in remaining \u201916 operational funding to American Samoa released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, D.C.\u2014This week the Department of the Interior Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas Esther Kia\u2019aina released $18.3 million remaining in grant assistance for fiscal year 2016 to the American Samoa Government through the Office of Insular Affairs\u2019 (OIA) Operations Grant Program. <\/p>\n<p>These funds are what remained of the annual $22.75 million needed to support the daily operations of the American Samoa Government, the LBJ Tropical Medical Center, the American Samoa Community College, and the High Court of American Samoa.  The annual operations grant for American Samoa funds the difference between the island\u2019s budget needs and locally-generated revenue and remains constant each year to support government operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese funds are critical to supporting the operating costs of the judiciary, the hospital, and the public schools for the American Samoan government,\u201d said Assistant Secretary Kia\u2019aina. \u201cInterior has a long history with American Samoa and we are pleased to support Governor Lolo and the people of American Samoa.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The Department of the Interior is responsible for coordinating federal policy with respect to the territories of American Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and administering and overseeing U.S. federal assistance provided to the Freely Associated States of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau under the Compacts of Free Association.
