The Senate last Friday confirmed the appointment of Robert Guerrero to the post of the commissioner of the Department of Public Safety.<\/p>\n
Senators also confirmed Gov. Ralph DLG Torres\u2019 nominations of Clarence Tenorio to the Commonwealth Ports Authority board and David Demapan to the Commonwealth Development Authority board.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am glad that it\u2019s over,\u201d Guerrero told reporters after his confirmation during a Senate session last Friday. \u201cNow, I can get to work.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked for the issues he\u2019d like to tackle first at his new post, the former Department of Corrections commissioner spoke to \u201ctaking care\u201d of his officers. \u201cThe governor mentioned that we are trying to get salaries commensurate with their duties, get them uniforms, get them vehicles so they can do their work in protecting the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThese guys have been their 10 or 15 years at the entry level so the governor saw that\u201d and also my predecessor, James Deleon Guerrero. \u201cUnfortunately, money is tight. The administration is taking extra steps in addressing and trying to identify the funds to try to bring up salaries of all law enforcement, not just DPS.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe governor is looking across the board as far as law enforcement is concerned,\u201d Guerrero added.<\/p>\n
On rumors that \u201cice,\u201d or crystal methamphetamine, was in his department, Guerrero said that rumors that ice is in government or across the community is \u201cno secret,\u201d and said he would continue to strive to solve the problem.<\/p>\n
During the session, Sen. Jude Hofschneider (R-Tinian) urged Guerrero to look at issues like the exponential increases of car rentals for tourists and the related issues in road safety because of that, as well as illegal taxies on island, among others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
