The Saipan Mayor’s Office and the Saipan Cares for Animals have teamed up for this weekend’s mass adoption. (Jon Perez)

The Saipan Cares for Animals said they have spayed, neutered, and vaccinated all the dogs and cats up for adoption this weekend at the animal shelter in Lower Base.

SCA in cooperation with the Saipan Mayor’s Office, under Mayor David M. Apatang, will be holding the Free Adoption Weekend on Feb. 6 and 7. The shelter will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and 12noon to 4pm on Sunday.

A total of 55 dogs are up for adoption and SCA will be paying the $20 adoption fee for each dog. New dog owners will only pay the licensing and registration fees of $6 per year.

“Why are we doing this? We have 40 kennels available at the shelter and we are currently over-capacity. We simply have no more room to house any animals and we want to get them into good homes,” said SCA president Jason Hudy.

Guam veterinarians Dr. Jennifer Landis and technician Bambi Leone had been assisting local animal volunteers and staff of the Saipan Mayor’s Office Animal Control Office with the spay and neuter program.

“So any animal adopted this weekend will not have any unwanted pregnancies and will be protected to the best of our ability from diseases,” said SCA healthcare assistant Jordina Walker.

Nicole Essa, another SCA volunteer, added that they are not supporting plans to turn the dogs to guard dogs that are tied up in chains outside the house.

“It should be noted that we are adopting out pets, not guard dogs. Our dogs (and cats) have been socialized and are friendly, looking for love and attention. Dogs are social animals and are meant to be included as part of your family,” said Essa.

“Besides, if a dog is chained up it really does no good to ‘protecting’ your house anyways if it can’t get off its chain. The best way for dogs to protect a house is to be inside of the house,” she added.

Pictures and breeds of pets (dogs and cats) that are up for adoption can be seen on the SCA Facebook page or at www.SaipanCaresforAnimals.com. Animals cannot be reserved and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Saipan Cares for Animals said they have spayed, neutered, and vaccinated all the dogs…

[4
51,9530,1507,9405
post-220233","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-local-news","tag-guam","tag-nicole-essa","tag-saipan-mayor","tag-sca
["GET
