Bordallo informed Calvo that she has placed a hold on this project until the Navy can provide additional information on this project, as well as provide a clear plan for how this project will be incorporated into DoD’s “net-negative” strategy.

The project is part of the Navy’s overall goal to increase renewable energy consumption and is not directly related to the realignment of Marines from Okinawa to Guam. However Congresswoman Bordallo believes that any project that proposes using additional lands should be considered as part of the Navy’s “net-negative” strategy. She strongly supports the Navy’s efforts to develop sustainable energy infrastructure, but this must be balanced with concerns raised by our local community.

“Any DoD project that proposes leasing additional land on Guam should be accounted for in the DoD’s ‘net-negative’ strategy. I want to ensure concerns that have been raised by local families are addressed, so I have placed a temporary hold on this project until the Navy provides information on this particular effort. I am fully supportive of the Navy’s efforts to increase renewable energy consumption, but there are a number of questions that must first be answered. I will continue to work with our local leaders and federal partners to ensure the concerns of our local community are addressed by federal officials.” (PR)

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Madeleine Z.
