{"id":22239,"date":"2012-06-21T07:21:21","date_gmt":"2012-06-21T07:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newspaper.ctsi-logistics.com\/?p=22239"},"modified":"2012-06-21T07:21:21","modified_gmt":"2012-06-21T07:21:21","slug":"defendant-in-foiled-armed-robbery-gets-4-years-in-jail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/defendant-in-foiled-armed-robbery-gets-4-years-in-jail\/","title":{"rendered":"Defendant in foiled armed robbery gets 4 years in jail"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>By Ferdie de la Torre<br \/>\nReporter<\/div>\n<p>One of two men charged with seven violations, including attempted first degree murder, in connection with a foiled robbery on two Chinese nationals entered a guilty plea yesterday and was sentenced to four years in prison with no possibility of parole.<\/p>\n<p>Alfred A. Demapan pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon. In exchange for his guilty plea, the Office of the Attorney General agreed to dismiss the remaining charges.<\/p>\n<p>Superior Court Associate Judge David A. Wiseman reluctantly accepted Demapan&#8217;s guilty plea and the plea agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Wiseman considered the defendant&#8217;s lack of criminal history, among other factors, as he also noted that four years in prison without parole is like imposing a 12-year-jail term.<\/p>\n<p>The judge sentenced the 20-year-old Demapan to 10 years in prison, all suspended except four years.<\/p>\n<p>Demapan was given credit for the time he already served in jail.<\/p>\n<p>After completing the jail sentence, the defendant will be placed on five years of probation. He was ordered to pay a $400 fine, $500 in probation fee, and $25 in court costs.<\/p>\n<p>Wiseman said Demapan is jointly liable to pay $5,379.72 in restitution with his co-defendant.<\/p>\n<p>Wiseman required the defendant to write letters of apology to the victims, Hui Cai and Shu Hua Zhou, and complete 200 hours of community work service.<\/p>\n<p>While in jail, Demapan will be required to participate in anger management counseling through the Department of Corrections.<\/p>\n<p>According to the plea agreement, on Dec. 29, 2009, Demapan along with a co-defendant requested a ride from taxi driver Hu Cai and his girlfriend Shu Hua Zhou with the shared intent to rob them.<\/p>\n<p>When the taxi stopped at their destination, Demapan attacked Cai with a hammer causing lacerations to the head, while the co-defendant attacked Zhou with a knife, attempting to take her money and property.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants then exited the vehicle and fled.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ferdie de la Torre Reporter One of two men charged with seven violations, including&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-22239","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22239","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=22239"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22239\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=22239"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=22239"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=22239"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
