The Marianas March Against Cancer is an annual event that is close to the hearts of the family of Dr. Ignacio Dela Cruz, D.V.M., since his mother and brother fell victim to the disease that has claimed a lot of lives here in the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy mother and brother died of cancer. We were hoping that our mom would survive it but she passed away,\u201d said Dela Cruz, whose mother and brother died of pancreatic and prostate cancer, respectively.<\/p>\n
The Dela Cruz, along with his wife Victoria and their children, donated $1,500 to the 2016 MMAC set on May 13 and 14 at the Hopwood Junior High School field. The check presentation was held yesterday at the Commonwealth Cancer Association\u2019s office in Middle Road.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhenever we are needed, we are always ready to help out in any way that we can. I just wish we could have given a bigger amount,\u201d added Dela Cruz, whose family has been supporting various community events and fundraising activities.<\/p>\n
Geri C. Dela Cruz, the 2016 MMAC overall chair, thanked the Dela Cruz family’s donation saying that it wasn\u2019t the first time that they had done it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe 2016 MMAC committee is thankful with their donation. People in the community, like Dr. Dela Cruz and his family, that are doing their best in supporting causes like this, that speaks a lot of how we help each other,\u201d said Geri Dela Cruz.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are also thankful for the MMAC committee members and CCA officials who always find time to come in meetings amidst their busy schedule<\/p>\n
CCA president Bo Palacios said the donation by Dela Cruz\u2019s family would go a long way in supporting their events and other programs that promote awareness as well as providing information and hope either to cancer patients, survivors, or their families.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll funds that goes to CCA are utilized, every centavo of it, to various programs that help cancer patients and educate people about cancer. In April, there are two dozen events that are dedicated in raising awareness on oral cancer,\u201d Palacios said.<\/p>\n
Nola Hix, a 2016 MMAC committee member, added that a lot of people had been affected by cancer in their lives. \u201cIn one way or another we are also survivors.
