SCfA is trying to have the animals—10 dogs and two cats—adopted as the facility will be closed down for good.

The Department of Public Works-Building Safety Code Division has deemed the animal shelter, which is under the Saipan Mayor’s Office, structurally unsafe after the damage brought by Typhoon Soudelor.

The DPW-BSCD has ordered the staff and volunteers of the animal shelter to vacate the facility on or before March 31, 2016. Soudelor tore off the roof and walls of the animal shelter prompting the volunteers and staff of the Animal Control Office to cover the cages with tarp just to keep the dogs and cats dry.

That’s why SCfA president Jason Hudy and other volunteers made a plea to the community to adopt a pet otherwise they would be put down or euthanized since the shelter is closing.

SCfA, in a post on their Facebook page, said there was another tremendous response from the community. The group added close to 20 dogs and eight cats were adopted.

“Thank you to everyone who adopted, and special thank you to Beth Pliscou, Nicole Essa, and Spencer Marchadesch who are doing all the hands-on work at the shelter,” SCfA said.

The SCfA added that there are still 10 days before the shelter closes and animals left would be euthanized. The Saipan Mayor’s Office has no temporary facility to house the impounded dogs and cats.

The SCfA and Animal Control Office program manager Spencer Marchadesch is again appealing to members of the community to adopt a pet. Those who are interested can visit the animal shelter in Lower Base.

The animal shelter is open from 7:30am to 4:30pm everyday. A $6 license fee is needed in adopting a dog that has already been spayed or neutered. Cats can be taken home immediately since they do not need to be registered.

For more information, call the Saipan Mayor’s Office at 234-6208 or text or call Marchadesch at 783-4743 or Hudy at 789-9464 or Essa at 788-3000.
