{"id":224508,"date":"2016-04-04T06:00:11","date_gmt":"2016-04-03T20:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=224508"},"modified":"2016-04-04T06:00:11","modified_gmt":"2016-04-03T20:00:11","slug":"cda-improve-programs-economy-grows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/cda-improve-programs-economy-grows\/","title":{"rendered":"CDA to further improve programs as economy grows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Commonwealth Development Authority capped its 30th anniversary celebration with a luncheon gathering at the Saipan World Resort last Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The luncheon was attended by present and past CDA board of directors, managers, and officers, as well as members of the Legislature and some of CDA\u2019s clients. <\/p>\n<p>According to CDA managing director Manny Sablan, they were successful in reaching out to the community during their month-long celebration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe tried to reach out to the community, Saipan, Rota and Tinian, and it went very well. Basically we just tell them what we\u2019ve done over the last 30 years and what are the programs going forward,\u201d Sablan said, adding that they will make the organization more effective and efficient. <\/p>\n<p>Just some of CDA\u2019s upcoming projects will include training and extending underwriting abilities to Rota and Tinian. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re reorganizing the offices on Rota and Tinian,\u201d Sablan said.<\/p>\n<p>Through their stakeholders meetings in the three islands, CDA was also able to get feedback about their programs and that \u201cthe prognosis is good.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re taking those advice seriously, we will try to do whatever we can to further improve so that we can effectively deploy more loans,\u201d Sablan said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Growing economy<\/strong><br \/>\nAccording to Sablan, they are seeing an increase of loans in their State Small Business Credit Initiative both in terms of borrowers and amount.<\/p>\n<p>For SSBCI, which is a loan from the banks and where CDA provides support, they have already loaned $4 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been able to fully deploy the first tranche of the $13 million,\u201d Sablan said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see this thing generating every week, new loan requests coming in, that is beautiful,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Another CDA program that has been very active and has been generating borrowers is their microloan program where borrowers can loan up to $25,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have set aside $750,000 for the microloans,\u201d Sablan said.<\/p>\n<p>In general, Sablan notes that the CNMI\u2019s economy has been improving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole economy also seems to be improving as you can see in the construction that\u2019s going on, the traffic,\u201d Sablan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re also trying to find ways to help the government in terms of getting some of the infrastructure financed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>During the luncheon, Bank of Guam senior vice president and chief economist Joseph Bradley gave a talk on \u201cEconomic Conditions and Prospects\u201d where part of his discussion was the economy of the three majo countries that are key players in CNMI\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>CDA also awarded the winner of its Business Plan Competition that was held in partnership with the Northern Marianas College.<\/p>\n<p>College student Alexandra Villagomez took home $1,000 scholarship after her business project \u201cKinsi Minutos Oil Change\u201d was chosen as the winner.<\/p>\n<p>CDA said they hope to continue this competition every year.<\/p>\n<p>CDA was established on May 31, 1985 through Public Law 4-49 signed by then governor Pedro P. Tenorio.
