{"id":225382,"date":"2016-04-14T04:00:33","date_gmt":"2016-04-13T18:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=225382"},"modified":"2016-04-14T04:00:33","modified_gmt":"2016-04-13T18:00:33","slug":"guam-supreme-court-upholds-convictions-tourists-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/guam-supreme-court-upholds-convictions-tourists-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"Guam Supreme Court upholds convictions for tourists\u2019 deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>HAGATNA, Guam<\/strong> (AP)\u2014The Supreme Court of Guam has denied an appeal filed by a man sentenced to life in prison for the deaths of three Japanese tourists in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The high court\u2019s decision on Monday upheld the criminal convictions of Chad DeSoto, who was found guilty in August 2014 of three counts of aggravated murder and 11 counts of attempted aggravated murder.<\/p>\n<p>DeSoto had pleaded not guilty by reason of mental illness for driving into pedestrians on a sidewalk and stabbing bystanders with knives in Tumon.<\/p>\n<p>In his appeal, DeSoto argued that his conviction should be reversed because the court gave inadequate instructions to the jury regarding his mental state.
