(Contributed Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Northern Marianas Humanities Council cordially invites the public to a presentation by visiting anthropologist Dr. Don Rubinstein that will be held at the Fiesta Hall of Grandvrio Resort (formerly Hafadai Beach Hotel) on April 29, beginning at 6pm.<\/p>\n<p>Rubinstein\u2019s presentation is titled \u201cThe Art and Vision of Paul Jacoulet in Micronesia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Pacific Islands have long held a special place in the imagination of visiting artists, evoking notions of \u201cparadise\u201d since Europeans first encountered the islands and their inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p>Among outside artists in Micronesia, Jacoulet\u2019s work stands out for its technical virtuosity, its marvelous vision, and its intimate and admiring portrayal of island people<\/p>\n<p>Working in the exacting medium of Japanese woodblock (ukiyo-e) printing, Jacoulet produced a stunning collection of portraits based on his visits to the Marianas and Caroline Islands in the late 1920s and early 1930s.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_226059\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-226059\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Rubinsteins.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-226059\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-226059\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Rubinsteins-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Rubinsteins\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-226059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rubinsteins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jacoulet\u2019s first published prints, the iconic Rainbow Series (1934), featured seven beautiful Chamorro women in Saipan, each featured in a different color.<\/p>\n<p>Rubinstein will provide an overview of Jacoulet and his work with a particular focus on the Rainbow Series.<\/p>\n<p>Descendants of the Rainbow women who attend the presentation will be provided with a ribbon whose color corresponds to the rainbow color of their relative\u2019s portrait.<\/p>\n<p>Rubinstein has been on the faculty of the University of Guam\u2019s Micronesian Area Research Center since 1988.\u00a0 He teaches graduate courses in University\u2019s Micronesian Studies Program.<\/p>\n<p>He first became interested in Jacoulet\u2019s work in the early 1980s and has curated several exhibits of Jacoulet\u2019s works at the ISLA Art Gallery.
