{"id":227045,"date":"2016-05-05T06:06:55","date_gmt":"2016-05-04T20:06:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=227045"},"modified":"2016-05-05T06:06:55","modified_gmt":"2016-05-04T20:06:55","slug":"ags-cup-competition-will-handguns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/ags-cup-competition-will-handguns\/","title":{"rendered":"AG\u2019s Cup competition will be on handguns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Office of the Attorney General will hold its 32nd Annual Attorney General\u2019s Cup Speech Competition on May 6, starting 9am at the CNMI Supreme Court courtroom. <\/p>\n<p>This year, a total of seven high schools will be participating in the competition: Marianas High School, Saipan Southern High School, Mt. Carmel School, Grace Christian Academy, Marianas Baptist Academy, Dr. Rita H. Inos High School (Rota), and Northern Marianas Academy. <\/p>\n<p>The 32nd annual competition focuses on the topic of handguns, \u201cShould the CNMI permit individuals to carry handguns on their person in public?\u201d Those in favor are asked to argue whether individuals should be required to conceal the handgun, whether individuals should be required to carry the handgun open ad in plain sight, or whether individuals should be permitted to choose whether to conceal or openly carry the handgun.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, outline any restrictions you would impose on individuals seeking to carry handguns in public. Those who oppose will provide an argument in defense of this position. <\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Edward Manibusan said, \u201cThis is highly debated issue in the CNMI and I look forward to hearing the students argue on the issue.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The Attorney General\u2019s Cup grants high school students in the CNMI the opportunity to research on the topic provided for by the Attorney General\u2019s office. Students are required to prepare the speech and sharpen their communication skills. <\/p>\n<p>Students spend months preparing for the event and the groundwork is evident when the students deliver their speeches on the day of the competition. The Marianas High school broadcasting production group will perform the video production of the Attorney General\u2019s Cup, and local radio station KKMP will provide live streaming of the speech competition. <\/p>\n<p>Assistant attorney general Heather Barcinas. who is a member of the steering committee, states, \u201cI am pleased with the support and cooperation of MHS broadcasting group and to Mr. Gary Sword of KKMP. Through this collaboration, more students and the general public will be able to appreciate accomplishments of the student speakers in this year\u2019s AG\u2019s Cup.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The Office of the Attorney General welcomes the public to attend the speech competition and support the students of the CNMI on May 6, 9am at the Supreme Court courtroom.
