{"id":230465,"date":"2016-06-21T06:05:40","date_gmt":"2016-06-20T20:05:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=230465"},"modified":"2016-06-21T06:05:40","modified_gmt":"2016-06-20T20:05:40","slug":"pagan-conference-called-off-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/pagan-conference-called-off-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Pagan conference called off this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Northern Islands Mayor Jerome Kaipat Aldan says the conference set originally set on Pagan this month has been postponed.<\/p>\n<p>He said a majority of those invited to go up to the Northern Islands for the conference, also known as the \u201cKonferencian Dinana Islas Marianas,\u201d were dignitaries from Guam and they were \u201cso caught up with\u201d activities with the Festival of Pacific Arts, which occurred last May and early June, and again had obligations for Guam\u2019s Liberation festivities on July 21.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not really what you might think it is that we postponed it,\u201d Aldan told reporters on Saturday. He was asked about the state of the living area of Pagan after a man last month allegedly caused havoc on Pagan by setting on fire helicopter fuel tanks, shooting a radio communication system, breaking into the mayor\u2019s house with a sledgehammer, and damaging the mayor\u2019s vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#8217;t gone up there since that incident,\u201d Aldan said. \u201cI\u2019m trying to get up there. Hopefully, [office of] Procurement signs off on my purchase requisition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also said his office would be getting a $90,000 grant from the Office of Insular Affairs to purchase more upgraded communication systems, and indicated he wanted these before a conference was held.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to try upgrade the communications systems up there, not only for Pagan but for the rest of the Northern Islands\u2026We need some of form of communication. Hopefully I can get even Internet accessibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if the conference would still be set for this year, the mayor said, \u201cMaybe not. Maybe in 2017.
