{"id":231285,"date":"2016-07-01T06:02:40","date_gmt":"2016-06-30T20:02:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=231285"},"modified":"2016-07-01T06:02:40","modified_gmt":"2016-06-30T20:02:40","slug":"social-security-pumps-28-8m-nmi-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/social-security-pumps-28-8m-nmi-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Social Security pumps $28.8M into NMI economy\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_231328\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-231328\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Camacho-pix-Camacho.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-231328\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Camacho-pix-Camacho-276x300.jpg\" alt=\"Bridgette Camacho\" width=\"276\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-231328\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-231328\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bridgette Camacho<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Social Security pumped $28.8 million into the CNMI\u2019s economy last year, according to SS Administration District Manager-Saipan Bridgette Camacho. <\/p>\n<p>Camacho disclosed that 2,750 people in the Commonwealth received $20.9 million from SS benefits in 2015, while another 1,033 received $7,920,000 in Supplement Security Income payments.<\/p>\n<p>Camacho discussed SS programs at the 2nd Annual \u201cOne Community CNMI\u201d Conference: Employment and Reentry\u2014Connecting Employers and Their Employees with Government Opportunities held yesterday at Kanoa Resort Saipan\u2019s Seaside Hall.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, the SSA district manager said Supplemental Security Income (SSI), is a new state program, it\u2019s non-taxable, and a program run by the federal government and paid by the federal government. <\/p>\n<p>Camacho said SSI is a monthly cash assistance program for low-income aged, blind, or disabled persons. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Northern Marianas is the only insular area eligible for Supplemental Security Income, thanks to the negotiators of the Covenant between the CNMI and the United States,\u201d she noted. <\/p>\n<p>Camacho said Covenant negotiators included this in the negotiations with the U.S. <\/p>\n<p>She said Guam, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa don\u2019t have SSI because it was only the CNMI government that negotiated this into the Covenant in establishing the Commonwealth. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we are very lucky,\u201d Camacho said.<\/p>\n<p>The district manager said the federal Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability program\u2014popularly called Social Security\u2014provides monthly benefits to an eligible worker and family members when the worker reaches retirement age or dies or becomes disabled.<\/p>\n<p>She said retirement eligibility requires 40 quarters (generally 10 years) of payment through the Federal Insurance Contribution Act (FICA) payroll deduction;
