{"id":23359,"date":"2012-07-06T07:28:05","date_gmt":"2012-07-06T07:28:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newspaper.ctsi-logistics.com\/?p=23359"},"modified":"2012-07-06T07:28:05","modified_gmt":"2012-07-06T07:28:05","slug":"cashiers-tag-mirano-in-stale-check-cashing-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/cashiers-tag-mirano-in-stale-check-cashing-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"Cashiers tag Mirano in stale check cashing scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Cashiers yesterday testified Earl Eric Mirano as the one who purchased some items at their stores using CNMI tax refund checks that turned out to be stale and forged.<\/div>\n<p>A cashier at Hannam Market said that Mirano, a regular customer, bought some grocery items worth $56.52 using a tax refund check in the amount of $189.83.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it&#8217;s a legitimate check,\u201d said the cashier during the ongoing federal jury trial of Mirano and his co-defendant, Mohammad Jahangir Miah.<\/p>\n<p>The cashier testified that when she asked for an identification card, Mirano handed her his passport.<\/p>\n<p>Miah and Mirano are facing charges over a scheme of cashing stale CNMI tax refund checks in grocery stores. They are charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud and bank fraud. The trial began on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>A cashier at LJ Store also testified yesterday that he recognized Mirano as the person who purchased some items at the store using a tax refund check on Jan. 24, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The cashier said he looked at the photograph on a driver&#8217;s license that Mirano handed him.
