Hocog won the First 10-Ball Tournament held last June 30 at Joe’s Bar in Garapan.

Hocog defeated Fred Robiego in the finals to win the second week of the 10-ball competition.

After getting a bye in the first round, he took out Luis Fajardo, 2-0, before arranging the finals tiff against Robiego following a 2-0 win over Chester Hamoy.

Robiego, meanwhile, nipped Joey Cruz, 2-1, in the opening round. He then defeated Eugene Borja and Lito Escaleri with the same 2-1 score in the second and third round, respectively, to advance to the championship round against Hocog.

In the finals, Hocog drew first blood when Robiego missed on the final ball.

Robiego, however, rebounded nicely in the second game when Hocog fouled on the 8-ball.

Having a two ball handicap over Hocog and with ball in hand, Robiego only had to pocket the 8-ball to win and he did to force a third and deciding game.

Unfortunately for Robiego, he couldn’t build on his momentum in the do-or-die final match. He missed on the 5-ball that allowed Hocog to make a clean sweep of the remaining balls to take the championship and a week’s worth of bragging rights.

Hocog earned $60 for the win as well as took home a case of Miller Lite and T-shirt. Robiego, for his part, settled for the $30 runner-up purse plus a case of Miller Lite. Escaleri, who beat Hamoy in the battle for third, got $20 and a Miller Lite six-pack.

Aside from the Top 4, also joining in the second week of the 10-ball challenge were Fajardo, Cruz, Borja, Mark Brian Nelvis, Jerry Soriano, Greg Guerrero, and Rico Montano.

The double-elimination 10-ball tournament is held every Saturday starting 9pm with sign-up an hour earlier.

Aside from the Billiards Congress of America rules, a handicap system based on the shooting skill of the player is used. Entrance fee is $10. Joe’s Bar is located in front of Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan.

For more information or to reserve your seat for the tournament, call 233-5367.

 Victor S.
