(Erwin Encinares)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two students of the Northern Marianas College were the initial beneficiaries yesterday of Matson Inc.\u2019s first donation of $1,500 out of a total of $7,500 in pledged scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>Matson will be donating scholarship funds in the next five years to students of Saipan\u2019s lone community college in celebration of 20 years of doing business in Micronesia. <\/p>\n<p>NMC president Dr. Carmen Fernandez is honored that Matson has expressed an interest in furthering their students\u2019 ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply appreciative of Matson\u2019s commitment to provide NMC students with scholarship funds over the next five years. The funds go a long way in helping our students reach their educational and professional goals,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Matson account executive Prudence Denight said that Matson believes in the \u201cadvantages of education and the opportunities it presents an individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a business partner and also a community partner. This year we are celebrating 20 years of conducting business in the CNMI, Guam, and in Micronesia, so we took up the opportunity to provide to start up this scholarship. This first issuance of check coincides with our 20th anniversary this year,\u201d said Denight. <\/p>\n<p>The two students that received the scholarship funds were Business Management major Gemma Somol and Business Management freshman Isa Seman.<\/p>\n<p>Somol said the scholarship would be beneficial to her. \u201cI really love it. I was so surprised when I found out. This is the first time I\u2019ve won a scholarship, so I really appreciate it. I feel like this would make my dreams possible. It would help me along the way,\u201d said Somol.<\/p>\n<p>Seman was also surprised to obtain the scholarship. \u201cI am actually surprised that I got it, but I am thankful for it.
