Evangelista

Michael N. Evangelista, a lawyer by profession who has just gotten appointed as a regent of the Northern Marianas College, was elevated yesterday as the new Board of Regents chair, replacing acting BOR chair Elaine Orilla.

Evangelista, who was chosen by other regents at a special meeting at the As Terlaje campus yesterday, said he was caught by surprise by this new development.

He was nominated to the post by regent Irene T. Torres. His nomination was unchallenged.

“I’m excited. It’s a new challenge for me. I had come up to the board thinking I would just be a regent, but not long after I joined the board, our chairman resigned for his [Frank Rabauliman’s] own personal reasons. The other members ended up nominating me for the position,” said Evangelista.

Even though his new position would take much of his time, Evangelista, who is an alumnus of NMC, said he doesn’t mind, stepping up to the challenge of being NMC board chair.

“It will end up taking up more of my time because I’m an attorney so I have a law office to run,” he said. “Taking on the responsibility of a chairman adds more into my plate, but as a former alumnus of this school, NMC is something that is near and dear to my heart. When the opportunity came about and when the other members had to pass on the opportunity of chairman and asked me to serve in that capacity, I accepted the challenge willingly.”

Evangelista, who is with the Law Office of Michael Norita Evangelista, said he looks forward to serving NMC students.

“I look forward to contributing my time and my efforts into hopefully bringing some improvements to NMC,” he said. “At the end of the day, this is about serving our students and making NMC great and moving forward for the benefit of the students. That’s why I am excited in taking on this challenge.”

Evangelista studied law at the University of Idaho after obtaining a BA in Political Science at Washington State University. Prior to taking law, Evangelista obtained an AA in Liberal Arts at NMC.

Michael N.
