San Nicolas and other island leaders unveiled Tinian’s own Veterans Memorial Park.

San Nicolas also recognized all Tinian veterans with special mention of Tinian veterans who have passed on. In his opening remarks, he quoted American physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson who said, “A paltry few countries in the history of civilization have gotten to choose their leaders. How lucky we are to be among them” and acknowledged how lucky the United States is to have a military that protects this privilege with valiance, honor, and selflessness.

San Nicolas also extended his appreciation to the Tinian leadership for their support of Tinian’s veteran community.

“We began 2016 by dedicating a veteran’s pavilion as a space for current and former service members to gather in fellowship. In September, the Tinian Mayor’s Office, with the Tan Siu Lin Foundation and Bridge Investment Group, raised almost $2,000 for the fight against [post-traumatic stress disorder] in the CNMI,” said San Nicolas. “Today, I would like to announce that through our supplemental medical assistance program, we will pay for our veterans to go to Saipan for their medical services. At the same time, we are working closely with Delegate [Gregorio] Kilili [C. Sablan (Ind-MP)] as to how Tinian veterans can maximize the services of Veteran’s Affairs. In addition, the Tinian delegation will include in its next local appropriation the inclusion of medical subsistence for Tinian patients who suffer from PTSD.”

The Tinian’s Veterans Memorial Park was originally built during former mayor Ignacio Quichocho’s administration with the intention of building a leadership memorial. San Nicolas thanked former mayor Quichocho for his role in making the event possible. (PR)

On Veterans’ Day, Nov. 11, 2016, Tinian Mayor Joey P.
