The long-running chairman of the Board of Education, Herman Guerrero, officially stepped down as chairman yesterday, after holding the position through multiple years on and off since joining the board.<\/p>\n
The BOE immediately elected Marylou Ada yesterday as the next BOE chair.<\/p>\n
Guerrero was reluctant to step down from the position, but thinks it is about time that he sits back a bit. Guerrero clarified this does not mean that he is giving up on the BOE.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany were disappointed because of my decision to step down. Just because I am stepping down does not mean I won\u2019t be there to support the BOE,\u201d said Guerrero. <\/p>\n
\u201cI still have two more years in my term, so I would very much be involved with BOE matters,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The new BOE chair, Ada, said she looks forward \u201cto being BOE chair once again.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel very confident that we would move forward and continue with the tremendous progress that we have made in our education system. I am up to the challenge and I believe I can lead the 2017 BOE into the unchartered waters that we have before us,\u201d said Ada.<\/p>\n
Ada has served as BOE chair several times. She believes the problems facing the Public School System today are very much different from the ones it used to face.<\/p>\n
\u201cEducation is\u2026constantly changing and we have to keep up with the changes. The challenges that we face today are more approachable and are more doable. I believe that we have a good team and I have learned with the past nine years that there is nothing that cannot be resolved if we put our heads together and our students first,\u201d said Ada.<\/p>\n
Ada is looking to make PSS more efficient in order to further prepare for the future of students.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are looking to streamline operations, not duplicate offices, and consolidate programs that could be put into one. Changes are coming; it is going to be a progress and we have to do it in order to keep up with the changing world of education so that we remain [relevant] in the world arena,\u201d said Ada. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
