The zoo says the bird was one of only 146 members of its species in the entire world.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post reports that Guam\u2019s kingfisher population suffered after the brown tree snake was accidentally introduced to the Pacific island shortly after the World War II. By the early 1980s, only about 30 remained. The threat of extinction spurred vigorous efforts at conservation.<\/p>\n<p>At present, the Guam kingfisher only exists in captivity.<\/p>\n<p>The zoo says that while the recently deceased bird didn\u2019t help produce any chicks, he was \u201ca terrific ambassador for his species.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP)\u2014A rare bird has died at the Smithsonian National Zoo\u2019s Bird House.
