{"id":245183,"date":"2017-01-26T06:00:03","date_gmt":"2017-01-25T20:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=245183"},"modified":"2017-01-26T06:00:03","modified_gmt":"2017-01-25T20:00:03","slug":"clarification-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/clarification-7\/","title":{"rendered":"Clarification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greetings: For students, parents, and community members concerned by the headline,\u00a0\u201cNMPASI laments SCOTUS case on students with disabilities\u201d\u00a0(Saipan Tribune, Jan. 24) let me help set the record straight.<\/p>\n<p>There has been\u00a0no\u00a0high court decision that limits assistance the federal government provides\u2014and requires\u2014for students with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>But there is a case currently before the U.S. Supreme Court that could lower the federal standards for what public schools have to provide students with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>That is why in November I filed an\u00a0amicus\u00a0brief with the Supreme Court, along with 117 other members and former members of Congress, speaking up for students\u00a0and their families.<\/p>\n<p>A lower court has ruled that federal law only requires a \u201cjust-above-trivial\u201d education for persons with disabilities.
