(Contributed Photo)\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>A new $2.5-million cafeteria for Marianas High School will be built to accommodate the growing student population as well as a new culinary arts program. <\/p>\n<p>Last Monday, MHS held a groundbreaking ceremony for the federally funded project.<\/p>\n<p>MHS principal Cherlyn Cabrera said the new cafeteria has become necessary. \u201cWhy? Because we need a bigger cafeteria for our current student needs,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>Despite the school\u2019s 1,600 student population, the current cafeteria can only accommodate 400 students. Cabrera said the need for a new cafeteria has been in the works for 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Cabrera also said the new cafeteria will allow for an expansion in career technical education, including a culinary arts program. <\/p>\n<p>Education Commissioner Cynthia Deleon Guerrero said the funding is a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>The new cafeteria will expand the vocational program of the Public School System. <\/p>\n<p>HBR International Inc. is the project\u2019s contractor. It is expected to be completed by January 2018. <\/p>\n<p>Other dignitaries that attended Monday\u2019s groundbreaking were acting governor Arnold Palacios, Saipan Mayor David Apatang, Reps. Edwin Propst, Lee Pan Guerrero, Angel Demapan, Frank Aguon, Frank Dela Cruz, Jose Itibus, Greg Sablan, Edmund Villagomez, and Joseph Deleon Guerrero, acting Board of Education chair Janice A.
